Chicago History

Site of Fort Dearborn in downtown Chicago

Some Chicago history: in downtown Chicago on the Southeastern tenders house of the Michigan Ave. bridge is a sculpture titled "Defense" by Henry Hering. A battle, which occurred during the war of 1812 immediately followed the evacuation of the fort as ordered by the commander of the US army. The battle lasted about 15 minutes and resulted in a complete victory for the Native Americans. After the battle, Fort Dearborn was burned down. Some of the soldiers and settlers who had been taken captive were later ransomed.

This is Starved Rock

Starved Rock

Another one of my favorite hiking places in Illinois is Starved Rock State Park.
Starved Rock State Park was named the best tourist attraction in Illinois for 2019. And rightfully so, they have amazing trails that end in beautiful waterfalls formed by glacial melt water.

The visitor center is a fun place to go in.There are several interactive displays, free videos on the park, hiking maps, and a snack bar.

The Starved Rock Visitor Center now hosts free guided hikes to Starved Rock and French Canyon every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. through February 9th and resume June 9th-November 17th, 2019. Guided hikes discuss the history, legend, geology, plants, and animals of the park.

There are over 13 miles of hiking trails and if you want to see a waterfall its best to go after a rain storm. The park is open all year long so it changes for the seasons, during the winter you will see ice falls. It is a beautiful place to visit but it can get crowded in the summer.

This is Midewin

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is in Wilmington, IL and is one hour from Chicago. Its a wonderful place to hike and if you are lucky enough you will be able to see bison grazing.

Before becoming a National Tallgrass Prairie, Midewin was the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant. As you hike around you can still see and tour some of the bunkers left behind.

We were able to see bison way off in the distance, maybe next time they will be closer.
The visitor center has cameras out in the field to track the bison so if you really want to see them, ask at the desk where the best place to hike is.There are several trails.

We did a lot of walking and I do recommend you wear appropriate shoes, I came home with blisters on my feet. I probably should'nt have worn new boots.😂

My first post

For my first post I would like to say I hope you enjoy some of my favorite things I will post. I love taking pictures of our travels, some may be kraisey, like my love of cemeteries and churches. I also enjoy gardening and cooking, so hopefully you will love my recipes. I'm kind of a history buff, especially Chicago history and Abraham Lincoln and the civil war. My favorite holiday is Halloween, I have some awesome crafts and ideas that I think you will love. I grew up in Chicago, where we have amazing architecture, cemeteries, food, and history. I have also lived in Texas, and traveled a little bit of the United States. My favorite place that I lived was in Tuscany Italy. While in Italy we traveled a bit thru Europe and have amazing pix to share. So, thanx for stopping by, and hope you enjoy.
